‘Paisley was the mills, and the mills were Paisley’

The year 2022 will be a significant year for the town of Paisley as its museum re-opens following an extensive refurbishment. There will be a wave of excitement as the eyes of the world can look at this latest development for the town. Some years ago there was a similar sense of excitement with the Paisley Thread Mill Museum and an interest in bringing to light the unique experiences of Paisley’s extensive thread mill and weaving industry. Evelyn Hood played a significant role in this renewed interest in the thread mills.

One of the unusual stories that I was able to share at school was that my famous mother had, has had, for most of my life, a man-made elbow. This didn’t have an impact on her writing career (other than slowing down her ability to type for a while) but it is perhaps one of the lesser-known facts about her life.

A change of direction

The late 2000’s saw a new direction in Evelyn’s writing, as she moved away from the historical novels which had been the main output of her writing for over twenty years. Instead, she embarked on the successful Prior’s Ford series, which had seven titles in all.

Evelyn’s main output is her historical novels, however she also ventured into other territories including plays, short stories, poetry and the popular modern-day novels centred on the village of Prior’s Ford.
